Precautions for using holmium laser fiber

Date: 2025-10-16 Browse: 2

Holmium laser fiber is conducted using quartz crystal and coated with a strong and wear-resistant layer to protect the fiber from damage and breakage during use, ensuring the durability of the product. Holmium laser lithotripsy fiber currently has various models and specifications on the market, which can meet different clinical treatment needs; Generally, optical fiber adopts the SMA-905 international standard interface, which is consistent with the vast majority of holmium laser treatment equipment on the market.

Characteristics and performance of holmium laser lithotripsy fiber

1. The holmium laser lithotripsy fiber is made of low hydroxide silicon oxide material. Due to the wavelength of the holmium laser being 2.1 microns and located on an absorption peak of water molecules, the absorption of holmium laser by the low hydroxide silicon oxide material fiber is relatively small, which facilitates the transmission of holmium laser;

2. Holmium laser lithotripsy fiber has two types: direct and side fired. Usually, side fired fiber is a disposable fiber, which can be reused if the laser emitting end is not damaged;

3. The basic specifications and models of holmium laser lithotripsy fiber include: 200 microns, 275 microns, 300 microns, 365 microns, 550 microns, 800 microns, 1000 microns, etc;

Precautions for the use of holmium laser fiber

  • Correctly peel and cut the front end of the optical fiber

During the stripping process, do not strip too long, around 2-3mm is sufficient. If the stripping is too long, use a specialized cutter to cut the fiber to the correct length. It is advisable to be able to see the colored skin in the field of view of the endoscope, and the front end should not affect the operation. The stripped optical fiber should be flat and intact, and the outer protective layer should be smooth and free of burrs.

  • Correctly check the end face of the fiber optic head

Before each use of medical holmium laser fiber, the end face of the fiber head should be checked. If there are foreign objects or damage in the end face, a new fiber should be replaced. After use, be sure to cover the protective cap.

  • Correctly inspect the fiber body of the optical fiber

This step is relatively simple. After connecting the fiber optic cable to the machine, turn on the indicator light and observe for any light leakage. If there is any light leakage, cut it forward.

  • Adjust the machine power correctly according to the manufacturer's instructions

Due to the varying energy capacity of different thicknesses of optical fibers, the output power of the machine should be adjusted correctly to prevent damage to the fibers during use. Do not blindly increase the power. For example, the maximum carrying capacity of a 200 micron pipeline is less than 30 watts (20Hz, energy not exceeding 1.3 joules); The maximum carrying power of 550 micron optical fiber is less than 40 watts; The maximum carrying power of 800 micron optical fiber is less than 60 watts.

  • Differentiate between disposable fiber optic and reusable fiber optic

Due to significant differences in coating thickness between disposable and reusable optical fibers, it is important to pay attention to the regulations on fiber packaging and registration certificates regarding the number of fiber uses. Disposable optical fibers are strictly prohibited from being reused.

  • Sterilization work should be done well for reusable optical fibers

The issue of infection control cannot be ignored. Different manufacturers have different sterilization methods for holmium laser fiber. The best sterilization method for reusable German Weifulei holmium laser fiber is ethylene oxide sterilization. During the sterilization process, pay attention to protecting the optical fiber and avoid bending it at too small an angle.
